Please do not DIY a crib
Cribs must meet current CPSC safety standards. Homemade cribs, cut-down sides, decorative cutouts, and soft mattress gaps have injured and killed infants. Kind Cradle will never publish DIY crib build instructions as a recommendation.
What affordable + safer looks like
Watch big-box sales, warehouse clubs, certified twinning programs, and reputable secondhand only when you can verify the model meets current standards, has never been recalled, includes all original hardware, and has a firm mattress that fits tight (less than two fingers along the sides is a common parent check — still follow manufacturer rules).
Secondhand crib checklist
No drop sides. Slats close enough that a soda can cannot pass through (verify current spacing rules). Stable, no missing screws. Flat firm mattress. No pillow toppers, bumpers, or inclined sleepers that conflict with guidance.
Soft savings elsewhere
Save money on decor, clothing, and toys instead — not on the sleep surface structure. Pair a safe crib with an affordable fitted sheet and a wearable sleep sack sized correctly.
